About the Work
|
The collagraphs, 'Traces' and 'Rockface', suggest the marks in walls and rockfaces that to me symbolise the evidence of lives lived before. When I was visiting Eastern Europe and thinking about the Jews who had perished in the various villages. I visited my mother’s village in Slovakia called Banovce where her actual house is still standing alongside many older buildings. I kept thinking about all the people who would have walked past these doors and walls and that has informed my work for years. My process of working with some monoprints is to do the first pull and then overlay layers of colour for weeks on end until I feel satisfied with it. Thus the importance of layers in my work. 'Hidden Prayer' was produced in this way as well as 'Greek Rockface'.
The same
process of mark marking informs my textiles and the hanging 'Earth Ashes and Fire'
is a piece of Antique Linen from my
mother’s trousseau. I dedicated this to two mothers: my own and my
husband’s mother as at the time I was stitching my mother in law was
very ill. Every stitch speaks to me of their lives. |
